Holy Cannoli! How in the world is it Friday again? This week just flew by for me.
For today’s “Friday Favorites” I’d like to highlight one of my favorite local places: the Nonnie Hood Parent Resource Center. The PRC, as it is commonly called, is located above the library in downtown Corning, NY. A surprising amount of people have no idea that this amazing resource for children and families is hidden right in their own backyards so to speak! I first learned about the PRC while I was attending Corning Community College for my early childhood education degree; as one of my assignments I was required to go tour the facility. It was during that tour that I fell in love with the PRC, their programs, and their mission.
This community resource offers a host of services including a parent resource library, parenting classes, community events (many of which are free), summer/winter break camps, childcare during kid’s night in and me time events, and use of their amazing facility most weekdays and Saturdays. They will also allow the facility to be rented for birthday parties or other events. The fee to play is a nominal donation to the center, but no one is denied entrance due to their inability to pay.
The facility itself is amazing. They have every possible toy and activity you could think of:
- sensory table that changes seasonally,
- art area stocked with paper, paints, crayons/markers/colored pencils, fresh homemade playdough, glue, loose parts, etc
- table toys/manipulatives (think peg boards, mr. potato heads)
- blocks (legos, wodden unit blocks, lego duplos)
- cars from matchbox sizes to ride on ones
- a plethora of doll houses/people/furniture
- dress up clothes
- baby dolls
- play food/dishes/kitchen
- a two-story club house
- climber with slides
- train table
- light table
- reading nook with books and couches
- musical instruments
- and a kitchenette with tables/chairs, fridge, sink, coffee pot, microwave, and snacks that are available for a small fee
There is even a gated-off area for infants with all sorts of baby-safe toys, a couch, crib, and changing table! There are coat hooks and cubbies located just inside of the door. The entire space is pretty darn child-proof. There is a child friendly bathroom located inside of the space as well. Adult bathrooms are located just outside of the facility door in the lobby. There is a large elevator, as it is located on the second floor, so you don’t have to worry about leaving your stroller downstairs. You are welcome to bring your own snacks/lunches with you as long as they are peanut free. Off-street parking is available in the library lot for a small fee or you can look for free street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. The PRC staff are amazingly helpful, knowledgeable, and great with children.
If you’re in or around the Corning area and haven’t been yet you should definitely check it out! If you live further away it’s still worth the drive over, and there are tons of other family friendly places to check out while you’re in Corning like the Corning Museum of Glass, Rockwell museum, Tanglewood Nature Center, Harris Hill Amusements (weather permitting), Market St which has lots of neat shops and eateries including a great toy store, and a plethora of local parks and playgrounds.
