This morning I would just like to briefly share my testimony of how I’ve been affected by listening to the General Women’s Session of this General Conference. Particularly a talk by Sister Linda K Burton titled “Certain Women”. For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints twice a year the church holds an event known as General Conference, once in April and once in October. During this conference members of the church presidencies and the prophet give talks on a variety of different subjects offering guidance, wisdom, and encouragement to church members/the world/anyone listening. The conference is held in Salt Lake City but is also broadcast to chapels worldwide, and is available via a live stream on the internet for viewing in your home. For more information about General Conference click here. To watch the upcoming sessions of the 187th General Conference which will be held this weekend, April 1st and April 2nd, go here.
After watching this talk, “Certain Women”, I’ve vowed to work towards being one of those “certain women”; women like Mary called Magdalene … and Joanna … and Susanna (Luke 8:1–3). I want to be a “certain women” who “bore positive, confident, firm, assured testimonies of the Savior.” A well know example of one of those certain women is located in Luke chapter 10 verses 38 though 42:
“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.””
Many times we ask ourselves the ever popular WWJD or “What Would Jesus Do”. Moving forward I vow to follow this acronym in addition to that one; MLM or to be “More Like Mary”. I want to strive to make time to sit at Jesus feet putting aside the cares of the world, even if only for a few brief moments each day, by more fully studying my scriptures, serving others, and having more heartfelt prayers. I invite you all to join me in being “More Like Mary”.
In Jesus Name Amen.
